Chapter sixteen

Daisy arrived a little after Meredith, and he took her to an interview room and explained what he wanted. She’d already heard from Linda about the previous afternoon’s comments, so she didn’t ask why. She sat in silence and nodded until he’d finished. Meredith wondered whether she was actually listening.

“Do you think you can do that? Did you understand what I’m after?” he asked.

“That’s easy enough. I’ve got two questions. How long, and how dramatic?”

“Dramatic?”

“Yes. Do you just want to feed them facts or do you want to shock them, put on a show?”

Meredith’s lips curled into a smile. “Can we do a show? Without me having to get the timing right, with the words in the right order?”

“Yep.” Daisy grinned. “I’m going to enjoy this, but I’ll need access to stuff.”

“No problem. I think you’ve got more access to it than me already. I need it for Friday morning, so I can run through it before I deliver it. Is that doable?”

“Two days including today?” Daisy’s eyes widened. “I’m not even in Bristol tomorrow. But I’m not going out either evening, so . . .”

“Yes. Lunchtime on Friday, it gives you the morning,” Meredith knew he was asking a lot, and knocked the desk. “Forget it. Not fair to drop it on you. Just put some slides together. Four slides. Who, what, when and how. I’ll talk them through the rest.”

“No. It’s fine. Seriously, it won’t take that long. Let me make a couple of calls, I’ll rearrange some stuff and work here this morning if I may.”

“Of course. If you need to get clearance, or escape anything non-urgent, give me a shout. The super owes me a favour.”

Daisy was already opening her laptop. “Go and do your briefing. I’ll make a start now. I might come back to you on getting me out of some calls.”

Meredith went to join his team. He knew it was a long shot whether Daisy would deliver a showstopper. But he’d cope if not. He still had the fight in him to convince them. Failing wasn’t an option. He clapped his hands to draw attention.

“Nothing new to say this morning. Loopy, carry on doing what you’re doing. If anyone else can help, while they’re not working on other stuff, rope them in. The rest of you, whatever is in your diary, or assisting Linda.” He looked around. “I take it you lot have nothing new for me? Good. Other than Loopy, give me a brief resume on what you’re up to today and we’ll crack on.”

Trump and George were continuing with their interviews. The first appointment was arriving at eight thirty. Patsy was out on home interviews, and Kent was working in the canteen at Buy Smart.

“Daisy is working on something for me in the comfortable interview room. Not sure how long she’ll be, or if she can move in here, but what she’s doing is vital, so just room share as best you can while she’s doing it. Crack on.”

Linda’s phone beeped, and she read her message.
